Bally Total Fitness is one of the most popular fitness franchises in America. Bally offers a gym chock-full of equipment, fitness classes, personal training, and more. Bally members mostly find their experience pleasurable while members, but when it comes down to cancelling, it can be challenging if not done properly.

Members can choose from a bi-weekly pay-as-you-go option with no long-term commitment and a paid-in-full plan. Each of the memberships follows a different cancellation process. It is always recommended that you read your gym contract, sometimes known as the 'membership agreement' to get the most accurate and complete information. If you don't have access to your membership, you can reach out to your gym location for more information, but let’s explore some of the potential steps to cancel your Bally membership.

What You’ll Need:

  • Photo ID
  • Membership number
  • Cancellation forms - provided by Bally Fitness
  • Personal information (Address, phone, email, Social Security number)
  • Bank account or credit card associated with your Bally account

Steps to Cancel Bi-Weekly Memberships:

  1. Visit your home gym and track down a membership representative.
  2. Ask to cancel your bi-weekly Bally contract. You paid the first two weeks and the last two weeks when you enrolled, so there should be two weeks lee-time before your membership is cancelled.
  3. There are no details about the specific paperwork required to cancel the no-commitment membership.
  4. Review your bank account or credit card 30 days after cancelling to ensure it’s been cancelled.

Steps to Cancel A Paid-In-Full Membership:

  1. Visit your home Bally gym around two months before your account is up for renewal.
  2. Meet with a membership representative and state that you do not want to renew your membership.
  3. Sign paperwork associated with the cancellation process.
  4. Check your bank account or credit card 30 days after cancelling to ensure your account has been cancelled.

Most gym franchises will charge a cancelation fee to retain some of the membership fees you won't be paying if you cancel.

I'm surprised they wouldn't honor a cancelation after closing their doors and automatically transferring your account. Have you tried contacting the LA Fitness gym where your membership was transferred? I would try there first.

Since 1991, we have been primer tennis members at Bally's club in Tacoma, WA. On Dec 1, 2011 the club suddenly closed with no notification to club members. Our memberships were transferred to LA Fitness also in Tacoma. Unfortunately, LAF does not have tennis facilties, so we cancelled our membership there. As we have always paid our dues each year on July 1, there is 7 months of unused dues we want refunded. LA Fitness states that they are not responsible for refunded dues and we must contact Bally's. That, however, is much harder than we imagined. The Bally's website will not accept our request (technical error!) and calls to several Bally's telephone numbers are all automated and block any communication for refunds. We have also submitted a letter to the Norwalk, CA offices. All to no avail! The club has now been closed for 6 weeks and there has been no communication from Bally's. What is the next?
