How to Cancel:

Pay off the remaining balance of your credit card. You should always make sure that your balance is $0 before you attempt to cancel a credit card.

If you need to cancel your MasterCard for any reason, you must call the customer support line at 1-800-MasterCard (U.S.).

Offer your account number and answers to any security questions. The representative will also request the security code on the back of the card. Possibly you will need to provide your social security number as well as date of birth, name on the card, and billing address.

Customer service team members have most likely been trained to offer you incentives so you won't cancel your MasterCard. Be direct and firm, and politely explain you wish to cancel your credit card and that is all.

You should receive mail confirming your cancellation, and it is important to retain this confirmation for your records.

Make sure to jot down the customer service representative’s name and any confimration codes associated with the communication.

Cut up your mastercard and throw it away.
