Macy’s is a national retailer that offers a store-only credit card. The card offers specialty sales, rewards, specialty mailers, and priority customer service rights. While this card is enjoyed by many, upon signing up some people do not realize that this is actually a credit card. So in the end, they are stuck with another credit card that they have to manage from a store they may or may not shop at frequently.

In fact, Yahoo! posted a recent incident that relates to just this. The customer complained: “The store clerk told me that it wasn't a credit card and that I'd have to call, but after reading the information I realized that there were no "regular" store cards (for free benefits and such). She told me the card would come in the mail...”

If you’re in this boat, and you want to cancel your card, here are the steps you need to process the cancellation and what’ you’ll need to prepare:

What You’ll Need:

• Your Macy’s credit card, including security code 
• Account information
• Personal information (name, phone, email, date of birth, and Social Security Number associated with card)

Steps to Cancel: 

1. Ensure that you’ve paid the Macy’s card balance in full. (Or if you just agreed to get the card, wait for it to come in the mail.)
2. Call Macy’s at 1-800-BUY-MACY. The number is also on the back of your card. Follow the prompts and connect with an operator. For verification purposes, you must state your name and address as they appear on your account as well as the last four digits of your social security number and your date of birth. 
3. Tell the customer service representative that you would like to cancel your Macy’s card immediately. Cite the reason if the customer service representative 
4. Take notes on the phone and ensure that the customer service representative is processing your cancellation request. Jot down a confirmation number, if possible. 
5. Review your bank statement 30 days after your cancellation to ensure that you’ve not been charged additional fees from Macy’s.
